Deadly Weather Strikes Karachi: 19 Lives Lost in Rain-Related Tragedies
In a devastating turn of events, heavy showers and thunderstorms have claimed at least 19 lives in Karachi, Pakistan, as the metropolitan city grapples with severe weather conditions. The casualties, reported on Wednesday night, resulted from a series of tragic incidents including collapsing roofs and walls, electrocution, and falling trees and signboards due to intense rain and gusty winds.
Details of the Fatal Incidents
SSP Korangi Sanghar Malik provided harrowing details, stating that 12 individuals were killed when the roof and wall of a telephone exchange collapsed on them in the Mochko Goth area of Saeedabad. The victims were sitting underneath the structure, having tea, when the heavy winds and thunderstorms caused the fatal collapse. Rescue teams are still working to clear the rubble, with fears that more survivors or bodies may be trapped underneath.
Most of these rain-related incidents occurred in low-lying and lower-income neighborhoods of Karachi, highlighting vulnerabilities in urban infrastructure. Deputy Inspector General of Police South, Asad Raza, confirmed additional casualties in other parts of the city. In Korangi, a couple died when the roof of their house gave way, while in Malir, two individuals were struck by lightning. Further tragedies were reported from Majeed Colony in Landhi, and in the Clifton area, where a woman's body was recovered from under a fallen tree trunk.
Widespread Disruptions and Official Warnings
The severe weather has led to significant disruptions across Karachi. Geo TV reported that dozens of electrical feeders tripped due to the heavy rain, leaving many areas without power. In response, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab issued a public service message, advising residents to stay home and avoid unnecessary travel on Thursday to ensure safety.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast continued rainier weather and strong winds for Thursday, exacerbating concerns. In a statement, the Met Office predicted showers, thunderstorms, and isolated hailstorms with moderate to heavy falls in multiple districts of Sindh, including Jamshoro, Hyderabad, Thatta, Sujawal, Badin, Matiari, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando Allah Yar, Umerkot, Tharparkar, Sanghar, Mirpurkhas, Naushahro Feroze, Shaheed Benazirabad, and Dadu over the next two days.
Broader Implications and Safety Measures
This incident underscores the urgent need for improved disaster preparedness and infrastructure resilience in urban areas prone to extreme weather. As climate patterns shift, cities like Karachi must enhance early warning systems and emergency response capabilities to mitigate such tragedies. Authorities are urging citizens to heed weather alerts, avoid exposed areas, and report any hazards promptly to prevent further loss of life.
