Metro services in Bengaluru were restored on Thursday after a massive technical outage paralyzed the network for several hours, leaving thousands of commuters stranded. The disruption, which began around 8:30 AM, affected all lines of Namma Metro, causing chaos at stations and forcing many to seek alternative transport.
Technical Glitch Causes Widespread Disruption
According to Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) officials, the outage was triggered by a power supply failure at a key substation. Repairs took over four hours, with full services resuming by 1:00 PM. During the halt, trains were held at platforms, and passengers were evacuated safely.
"We apologize for the inconvenience. Our teams worked round the clock to restore normalcy," said a BMRCL spokesperson. The metro carries over 500,000 passengers daily, and the outage caused significant delays across the city.
Political Fallout: BJP Takes Aim at Congress
The outage quickly became a political flashpoint. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticized the ruling Congress government in Karnataka, blaming it for poor infrastructure maintenance. "This is yet another failure of the Congress government. They cannot even ensure basic metro services," said state BJP president Nalin Kumar Kateel.
Congress leaders countered, citing ongoing upgrades and promising compensation for affected commuters. Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy stated, "We will investigate the incident and take steps to prevent recurrence."
Impact on Commuters
Many commuters faced long waits and crowded buses. Office-goer Priya Sharma said, "I was stuck for over an hour. This is unacceptable for a tech city." Autorickshaw and cab fares surged as demand spiked. Social media was flooded with complaints and memes about the chaos.
BMRCL has announced a review of its power backup systems to avoid future disruptions. The incident highlights the strain on Bengaluru's public transport as the city grapples with rapid urbanization and aging infrastructure.
