Seven Stolen Dogs Escape Meat Truck, Trek 17 km Home in Inspiring Pack Journey
A heartwarming and viral video has captured the attention of social media users worldwide, featuring seven different dogs traveling together in a unified pack. The footage shows the canines, uncertain about their destination, pausing occasionally to observe curious passersby. As questions arose online about the video's authenticity, the South China Morning Post confirmed the remarkable story behind it.
Dogs Spotted on Busy Highway After Escape
The seven dogs were first noticed walking along a bustling highway in Changchun, located in Jilin province, China. A netizen surnamed Lu spotted the group and shared the video on Douyin, China's version of TikTok. Lu described the scene as resembling "a band of little brothers in distress, moving in unison – nothing like stray dogs." The pack included a mix of breeds: an injured German Shepherd, a Corgi, Golden Retrievers, Labradors, and Pekinese dogs, all moving together in a coordinated manner.
Escape from Dog Meat Trade and Long Journey Home
Investigations revealed that the dogs had been stolen by thieves working for a dog meat shop and were transported away in a truck. However, in a daring escape, the seven dogs managed to break free from the vehicle. They then embarked on an incredible 17-kilometer journey back to their homes, completing the trek over two days. Based on video timelines, it is believed they escaped on March 16 and safely returned to their respective homes by March 18.
Lu attempted multiple times to assist the dogs, trying to guide them to safety, but they persistently ignored his efforts and continued walking. Other witnesses also reported seeing the dogs wandering through nearby fields during their journey. As the videos gained viral traction on Chinese social media platforms, volunteers quickly mobilized to track the dogs' movements and ensure their safe return home.
Community and Legal Response
Bitter Coffee Stray Dog Base, a local animal rescue organization, informed the South China Morning Post that the dogs originated from the same village and were familiar with each other, often playing together. This existing bond likely contributed to their ability to stay united as a pack throughout the two-day ordeal. One volunteer suggested that individuals operating a dog meat shop were responsible for the theft, though no direct witnesses observed the dogs' initial escape from the truck.
In China, dog theft is classified as a criminal offense, with penalties that can include fines or imprisonment, depending on the animal's value. The incident has highlighted ongoing concerns about the dog meat trade and spurred calls for stronger enforcement of animal protection laws.
The collective effort of netizens and volunteers underscores the power of social media in aiding animal welfare causes, ensuring these resilient dogs found their way back to safety and home.
