Mangaluru: Shivaram Karanth Balavana in Puttur is set for a major creative and infrastructure upgrade, with plans for a Dhyana Mandir to offer writers and readers a quiet space to think, write, and draw inspiration. The proposed development is intended to reflect the vision of Jnanpith awardee K Shivaram Karanth, while strengthening Balavana's role as a cultural and recreational space.
Dhyana Mandir Plans
A 6,000-sq-ft Dhyana Mandir, estimated to cost Rs 2.3 crore, is planned with a large dome structure. The space will include a gallery, reading racks and dedicated corners where visitors can access Karanth's works. "This is a place for literature, where people can sit in silence and write," MLA Ashok Kumar Rai said, noting that Balavana currently lacks even basic facilities such as washrooms.
Infrastructure and Amenities Upgrade
As part of the proposed upgrade, the children's play area will be revamped with new equipment, and the museum will be beautified. Improved lighting, better cleanliness and increased deployment of staff for maintenance and security are also planned. To draw more children to the space, a skating rink is being considered near the swimming pool area. "While we draw children through sports, we can also introduce them to literature," Rai said. Walking pathways will be widened, and the park landscape upgraded, including the addition of a gym.
Master Plan and Funding
A fresh master plan will be prepared, with architects and experts from across the state to be consulted. CSR funds will also be tapped. "The focus will be on execution and strengthening basic infrastructure," Rai said.
Cultural Programs and Committee
Monthly programmes themed around Shivaram Karanth, including Yakshagana, are also planned. A dedicated committee has been formed for Balavana's development, and Karanth's family members will be consulted before the works begin. Puttur sub-divisional assistant commissioner Stella Varghese was also present.
