Prayagraj: The Sangam city continued to face severe heatwave conditions, recording 45.7 degrees Celsius on Sunday, the second highest temperature in the state after Banda, which recorded 46.6 degrees Celsius, the highest in Uttar Pradesh.
Ironically, the majority of cities in the state are currently grappling with seasonal heatwave conditions, with mercury soaring to record highs, particularly over the weekend of Saturday and Sunday. The mercury has consistently stayed above 45 degrees Celsius in Prayagraj on both Saturday and Sunday, leading the heat charts among other cities like Varanasi and Banda, which have witnessed similar conditions over the past week.
The blistering heat throughout the day on Sunday made outdoor conditions unbearable for city residents. The majority of residents preferred to confine themselves within the four walls of their homes, and streets remained deserted throughout the day. However, public places like CSA Park witnessed a good crowd in the evening hours.
Weathermen predict that a fresh Western Disturbance might bring slight relief to the plains next week. Moreover, isolated thunderstorms and gusty winds are also expected in some parts of the state, which could slightly bring the mercury down. The arrival of such extreme temperatures has raised concerns over citizens' health. While district health authorities claimed to have made adequate arrangements, including setting up cool rooms in all medical units, doctors have urged citizens to take all preventive measures.
These measures include staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water, ORS, or homemade drinks like lassi and lemon water; limiting sun exposure by avoiding going outdoors between 12:00 noon and 4:00 PM; and dressing appropriately by wearing lightweight, light-colored cotton clothing and using umbrellas or hats.
