Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, for a three-day official visit, with economic security and energy security emerging as key priorities for discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The visit marks her first trip to India and includes participation in the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit, aimed at deepening the Special Strategic and Global Partnership between the two nations.
First Visit to India in Three Years
Upon arrival in the national capital, Takaichi shared her itinerary and objectives on social media platform X, expressing her anticipation for advancing strategic cooperation with India amid a shifting international landscape. "I have arrived in Delhi, the capital of India. As Prime Minister of Japan, this will be my first visit to India in about three years, and personally, my very first time visiting the country," she stated. She emphasized that discussions with Prime Minister Modi would center on urgent issues including economic security and energy security, with the goal of deepening the strategic cooperative relationship between Japan and India.
Takaichi's visit, from July 1 to 3, comes at the invitation of Prime Minister Modi. The 16th India-Japan Annual Summit is expected to review the full spectrum of bilateral cooperation and address regional and global issues of mutual interest, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
Focus on Strategic, Economic, and Technological Cooperation
The MEA noted that the summit will provide an opportunity for both leaders to strengthen cooperation across strategic, economic, technological, and security domains. The visit is expected to emphasize boosting investment and innovation, strengthening economic ties, and enhancing resilient supply chains in critical sectors such as semiconductors and critical minerals. Diplomatic sources indicated that discussions are also likely to cover maritime security, defense technology cooperation, and the development of an "Industrial Value Chain" connecting the Bay of Bengal and India's Northeast.
Takaichi is also scheduled to participate in the India-Japan Business Forum, where government and industry leaders from both countries will discuss expanding investment and commercial cooperation. This forum aims to foster deeper economic integration and explore new avenues for bilateral trade.
Building on Previous Summit Momentum
This visit follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi's trip to Tokyo in August 2025 for the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit. The ongoing engagement reflects both countries' commitment to strengthening their Special Strategic and Global Partnership in response to evolving regional and global challenges. The partnership has seen steady progress in areas such as infrastructure development, defense collaboration, and technology exchange.
The summit is expected to yield concrete outcomes in energy security, with both nations exploring cooperation in hydrogen energy, renewable energy, and nuclear energy. Economic security discussions will likely focus on diversifying supply chains and reducing dependence on single sources for critical technologies and materials.
As the two democracies work together, the visit underscores the importance of the India-Japan relationship in maintaining stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
