India has handed over two personal watercraft to the Sri Lankan Navy, further strengthening bilateral maritime security cooperation. The watercraft were formally handed over by the Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka in a ceremony held at the Colombo port.
Enhancing Maritime Capabilities
The personal watercraft, which are high-speed vessels designed for rapid response, will enhance the Sri Lankan Navy's capabilities in patrolling, search and rescue, and anti-smuggling operations. This assistance is part of India's ongoing commitment to supporting Sri Lanka's maritime security needs.
Strategic Importance
The Indian Ocean region is of strategic importance to both nations, and this cooperation aims to ensure peace and stability in the area. The watercraft will be used for coastal surveillance and to counter illegal activities such as drug trafficking and human smuggling.
India and Sri Lanka have a long history of defense cooperation, with India providing training, equipment, and other assistance to the Sri Lankan armed forces. This latest transfer underscores the strong bilateral ties and mutual commitment to regional security.
The ceremony was attended by senior officials from both navies, who emphasized the importance of continued collaboration in addressing common maritime challenges.
