The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather bulletin indicating contrasting conditions across the country. While Delhi-NCR has not experienced severe heatwave so far in June, temperatures are set to rise in North and Central India. Simultaneously, the southwest monsoon is advancing, bringing heavy rainfall to several regions.
Rising Temperatures in North and Central India
For travelers in Delhi-NCR, the immediate concern is the gradual increase in maximum temperatures by 4°C to 6°C until June 18. Isolated thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 40–50 kmph are expected on June 15, which could disrupt outdoor activities and cause flight delays or traffic congestion.
Heatwave conditions are likely in isolated pockets of Marathwada from June 15 to 17 and Vidarbha on June 15 and 16. Travelers planning trips to Maharashtra's interior districts should avoid afternoon excursions due to high heat risk, especially for vulnerable groups.
Hot and humid weather is forecast for Konkan, Goa, and Madhya Maharashtra from June 15 to 17, with warm nights in Konkan and Goa. Tourists should stay hydrated and schedule activities during cooler hours.
Monsoon Advances Across India
The southwest monsoon is progressing, with favorable conditions for further advancement into Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, and parts of Chhattisgarh over the next four to five days.
In Northeast India, widespread rainfall is likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura through June 20. Heavy to very heavy rainfall may cause reduced visibility, waterlogging, and road disruptions in popular destinations like Shillong and Cherrapunji.
Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are under close watch, with heavy rainfall on June 15 and 20, and very heavy rain from June 16 to 19. Travelers to Darjeeling, Kalimpong, or Sikkim should monitor advisories for landslides and road blockages.
Eastern India, including Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha, will receive isolated to scattered rainfall. Bihar may experience heavy rain on June 16 with thundersquall activity, affecting rail and road travel.
Southern India is entering a classic early monsoon phase. Kerala and Coastal Karnataka will see widespread rainfall, while Telangana's rain intensifies from June 18. South Interior Karnataka and Tamil Nadu will also receive significant showers, leading to lush landscapes but slippery trekking routes and rough beach conditions.
Marine Advisories and General Impacts
The IMD has advised fishermen against venturing into parts of the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea from June 15 to 19 due to squally weather. Coastal tourists should check with local authorities before boating or water activities.
General impacts include localized flooding, urban waterlogging, reduced visibility, traffic congestion, and landslides in vulnerable areas. Travelers are advised to plan flexibly and stay updated with local weather alerts.
