A catastrophic avalanche at Zero Point on the Zojila Pass in Jammu and Kashmir's Ganderbal district has resulted in the deaths of at least seven individuals and left five others injured. The incident occurred approximately 70 kilometers north of Srinagar, burying several vehicles under heavy snow and triggering a large-scale rescue operation.

According to a senior police officer, the vehicles were en route from Srinagar to Kargil when the avalanche struck around 3 PM on Friday. Police and rescue teams swiftly mobilized, utilizing JCB machinery to clear the snow and extricate trapped passengers. The rescuers successfully retrieved seven bodies from the wreckage, while five injured individuals were rescued and provided medical attention. As of the latest reports, two persons remain missing, and search operations are continuing in the challenging terrain.
All seven deceased have been identified as residents of Ladakh's Kargil district, highlighting the local impact of this tragedy. Senior officials from Ladakh, including Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, an executive councillor of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, promptly reached the site upon receiving the distressing information to oversee the response efforts.
