Nagpur: Vidarbha continued to endure a severe heatwave for the third consecutive day on Tuesday, with temperatures soaring across the region and several districts approaching historic highs for April.
Worst-Hit Districts
Akola and Amravati remained among the most affected locations, recording a maximum temperature of approximately 45.2 degrees Celsius. Wardha followed closely at 45 degrees Celsius. These three districts were the hottest in Maharashtra and globally, alongside other Indian cities in the top 15.
According to meteorological observations, Nagpur recorded an extreme temperature of 44.4 degrees Celsius, while Chandrapur touched 44.8 degrees Celsius. Other districts, including Yavatmal (44 degrees Celsius), Gadchiroli (44 degrees Celsius), Washim (43.6 degrees Celsius) and Brahmapuri (43.4 degrees Celsius), continued to experience intense heat, indicating a widespread and persistent heatwave across Vidarbha.
Approaching Record Highs
Notably, the current temperatures are edging closer to long-term April records in several cities. Amravati recently recorded 46.8 degrees Celsius on April 26, approaching its all-time April high of 46.8 degrees Celsius. Yavatmal and Wardha have also come close to their historical peaks for the month. Nagpur's current temperatures remain just below its April record of 47.1 degrees Celsius.
High Night Temperatures Add to Distress
The situation is being aggravated by high minimum temperatures, with nights offering little respite. Several cities, including Chandrapur and Yavatmal, recorded minimum temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius, significantly above normal levels. This has intensified discomfort and increased the risk of heat-related illnesses.
Adding to the distress is the complete absence of rainfall across the region in the last 24 hours, coupled with low humidity levels during the afternoon, which further enhance heat stress.
Impact on Daily Life
The ongoing heatwave has disrupted daily life, with roads wearing a deserted look during peak afternoon hours. Health experts have advised residents to avoid direct sun exposure, stay hydrated, and take necessary precautions, especially for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly and outdoor workers.
Weather Forecast
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued high temperatures over the next few days. It has warned of thunderstorms and lightning on Wednesday and Thursday across Vidarbha. A similar warning was issued for Tuesday, but no precipitation was recorded.
