A seven-foot python that became entangled in a fishing net deployed to shield crops on a farm in Onchi village was rescued on Monday morning, drawing attention to the hazards that makeshift protective measures pose to wildlife.
Rescue Operation by Wildlife Activists
Activists from the Navsari-based Wildlife Rescue Trust responded promptly after a farmer alerted them that a python had been caught in the net he used to prevent animals from damaging his crops. Harish Mali and his team arrived at the location and discovered the reptile completely tangled in the mesh.
The farmer had erected the fishing net around his field as a barrier to safeguard his crops from wandering animals. However, the netting inadvertently trapped the python, leaving it unable to free itself.
Careful Extraction and Release
The rescuers meticulously cut the net from multiple angles, ensuring they did not injure the python during the process. After successfully freeing the reptile, they handed it over to officials from the Navsari forest department. The forest personnel examined the python's health and subsequently released it back into its natural habitat in the forest.
This incident underscores the unintended consequences of using non-wildlife-friendly materials for crop protection, prompting calls for more sustainable and wildlife-safe farming practices.
