Over 1,100 Fire Incidents in Palakkad District This Summer
Palakkad Records Over 1,100 Fire Incidents This Summer

Palakkad district has recorded more than 1,100 fire incidents during the ongoing summer season, with many occurring in residential areas, officials of the Kerala fire and rescue services said. According to official data, 1,128 fire incidents were reported in the district over the past three months. Most cases were caused by dry grass catching fire and flames spreading from garbage dumps.

Incident Distribution Across Fire Stations

The highest number of incidents were reported under the Palakkad, Alathur and Shoranur fire station limits. Within Palakkad station limits alone, 265 cases were reported in the past two months, while Alathur recorded 147 cases and Shoranur 120 cases.

Major Fire in Palakkad Town

A major fire that broke out recently in Palakkad town caused panic among residents and resulted in losses exceeding Rs 10 lakh, as per a revenue department assessment. The blaze originated near a warehouse attached to a fruit shop in the town centre and completely destroyed the facility. A nearby flat also sustained damage, with air conditioners, electrical wiring and walls affected by the fire and smoke. Officials said a major tragedy was averted as residents were evacuated in time.

Public Negligence and Rising Temperatures

Fire and rescue officials pointed out that public negligence is a key factor behind many such incidents. With rising temperatures, dry grass in vacant plots becomes highly flammable, and even a small spark can trigger large fires, often spreading into nearby residential areas. Officials noted that the nature of fire incidents varies across regions. In urban areas, fires in commercial establishments pose a major challenge, while in rural areas, grass fires are more common.

Challenges for Fire Personnel

Reaching interior locations during emergencies remains a key difficulty for fire personnel. There have also been instances of fires originating from industrial waste in certain zones. Fire stations in the district are located in Palakkad, Kollengode, Alathur, Mannarkkad, Kanjikode, Chittur, Shoranur and Pattambi, each covering an approximate radius of 20km. Authorities said adequate equipment and personnel are available to tackle emergencies.

Water Availability and Industrial Fires

Water availability for firefighting has also been ensured during the summer, with supplies sourced from rivers and dams and stocked at fire stations. In the industrial hub of Kanjikode, fire incidents in factories have been a major concern this season, though officials said they have been able to control such incidents without major losses.

Warning About Water Bodies

Additionally, officials warned of a rise in accidents involving people entering water bodies such as dams in the Kanjikode region, urging caution among the public.
