In a dramatic wildlife rescue operation, forest department personnel in Coimbatore saved a female elephant that had become trapped in a deep mud pit within a private garden near Madukkarai. The incident unfolded on Sunday, culminating in a successful rescue after several hours of intense effort by the dedicated forest team.

According to forest officials, this particular female elephant had developed a pattern of raiding crops across agricultural lands in the Karadimadai, Kuppanur, and Theethipalayam regions. Local farmers had repeatedly appealed to the forest department to implement measures to prevent the elephant from causing damage to their crops, but no concrete action had been taken prior to this incident.
The Sequence of Events Leading to the Trap
The situation escalated around 6 PM on Saturday when the elephant ventured out of the reserve forest area and entered residential and agricultural zones, where it proceeded to damage crops. "It also chased vehicles traveling through the forest areas," noted a forest officer. As the elephant made its way toward the Bolampatti forest block-I, it accidentally fell into a mud pit and became stuck, unable to free itself.
Upon hearing the distressed trumpeting of the elephant, nearby farmers quickly gathered at the site and promptly alerted the forest department. The forest field staff responded immediately, arriving at the location to assess the situation and initiate the rescue operation.
The Rescue Operation Details
Madukkarai Forest Ranger Arun reported that they received the alert about the trapped elephant around 7:30 AM on Sunday. The team constructed a specially designed ramp to assist the elephant in climbing out of the pit. Throughout the operation, the situation was continuously monitored to ensure the safety of both the elephant and the rescue personnel.
"After a few hours of struggle, we successfully rescued the elephant," stated Ranger Arun. Once freed, the elephant was carefully guided back into the forest via the Bolampatti route.
