Hyderabad: A mild earthquake measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale struck Telangana's Kothagudem district in the early hours of Sunday, triggering tremors across several parts of the district. Officials said there was no loss of life or damage to property.
According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred at around 2.26 am. The epicentre was located about 111 km northwest of Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh, at a depth of 10 km below the surface.
Tremors were reported from Kothagudem, Paloncha, Mulkalapalli, Burgampad, Bhadrachalam and Manuguru, among other areas. Though the earthquake was of low intensity, residents said the shaking was clearly noticeable.
Many people were asleep when the tremors struck. Those who felt the quake reported sudden movement of beds, household items and kitchen utensils, causing brief panic and confusion.
Officials, however, said there were no reports of casualties or structural damage.
Previous Seismic Activity in Region
The latest tremor comes nearly 18 months after a stronger earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale struck Telangana on December 4, 2024. The quake, which had its epicentre in Mulugu district, occurred at a depth of 40 km and was felt in Warangal, Kothagudem, Bhadrachalam, Khammam and surrounding areas.
Earlier, on August 25, 2023, a 3.6-magnitude earthquake was recorded near Manuguru in the district during the early hours.
