Every once in a while, Anand Mahindra shares a travel post that makes people stop and think, "How have I never heard of this place before?" That is exactly what happened after his recent post about Honnavar, a quiet town on Karnataka's coast that suddenly found itself at the centre of a social media conversation.
Unlike Goa, Coorg or Kerala's famous backwaters, Honnavar is not usually the first place people think of while planning a holiday. In fact, many people admitted online that they had never even come across its name before Mahindra mentioned it.
Sharing pictures of the region on X, the industrialist said he has been trying to discover places that are beautiful without being crowded. According to him, Honnavar fits that description perfectly. "We often celebrate Kerala's backwaters, but on Karnataka's coast is a hidden gem that deserves equal attention," he wrote.
What caught his attention was the journey of the Sharavathi River. Most people know the river because of Jog Falls, one of India's most spectacular waterfalls. But after all that drama and power, the river eventually slows down and ends its journey at Honnavar, where it meets the Arabian Sea.
Mahindra described the area as a magical landscape filled with mangrove forests, winding waterways and calm backwaters that almost look like mirrors. Looking at the photographs he shared, it is easy to see why he was impressed.
Soon after the post went viral, people who had actually visited Honnavar began sharing their own experiences. One traveller said they had visited the area a few years ago and still remembered the view vividly. Another pointed out that Karnataka often gets overshadowed by neighbouring states when it comes to tourism, despite having some incredible natural beauty of its own.
A lot of the comments carried the same feeling: surprise. Surprise that a place this beautiful is not talked about more often. Surprise that so many travellers have been chasing crowded destinations while places like Honnavar quietly exist without much attention.
The conversation also sparked recommendations for other lesser-known spots around the country. People started mentioning hidden corners of Tamil Nadu, the Northeast and other parts of coastal India that rarely make it onto mainstream travel lists. But Honnavar remained the star of the discussion.
What perhaps resonated most with people was that the town seems untouched by the rush that comes with viral travel destinations. No endless queues. No overcrowded viewpoints. Just rivers, mangroves, open skies and the sea. At a time when many popular tourist spots are struggling with overtourism, that sounds pretty appealing.
Whether Honnavar stays a hidden gem is another matter altogether. Anand Mahindra's posts have a way of putting places on the map. But for now, the small Karnataka town is enjoying its moment in the spotlight, with thousands of people discovering that one of India's most beautiful landscapes may have been hiding in plain sight all along.
