12 Trees Collapse in Dehradun Amid Rains, Traffic Disrupted on Key Roads
12 Trees Collapse in Dehradun, Traffic Hit by Rains

Dehradun: At least 12 trees collapsed along the Rajpur Road and Garhi Cantt areas, causing traffic disruptions following rains in Dehradun on Friday. According to officials of the Dehradun district disaster management office, rains partly blocked rural roads in Chakrata and Tyuni areas, which reopened during the day.

“During the evening, we had 10-12 tree collapses along Rajpur Road and Garhi Cantt. There was no major waterlogging or any other rain-related damage in the city,” said DDMO Rishabh Kumar.

Tree collapse along with diversions for the President’s visit resulted in slow traffic movement. Traffic also remained slow on the Mussoorie Road. Most tree collapses were reported along the Rashtrapati Niketan and Tapovan stretch of Rajpur Road.

SP, Traffic, Jitendra Choudhary, told TOI that diversions were already in place, which did not hamper traffic movement too much. “Fallen trees were removed almost immediately and traffic kept moving gradually,” he said.

Rains last week also caused nearly 20 tree collapses in the city, many in the same area, as a result of which QRTs were already stationed here and lopping of trees was being carried out daily, said officials.

Meanwhile, CS Tomar, director of the regional meteorological centre, Dehradun, said that Uttarakhand is likely to continue receiving widespread rainfall over the next 24 hours, with moderate rain expected in many parts of the state and heavy rainfall likely at isolated areas. He said the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued an “Orange Alert” for Friday, warning of intense to very intense rainfall, thunderstorms, hailstorms and gusty winds reaching speeds of 50-60 kmph in some areas.

Tomar said rainfall activity is expected to ease slightly from June 13, with precipitation becoming more concentrated over western districts while eastern parts of the state may witness comparatively weaker activity. Moderate rainfall is likely in several northern districts, while other areas may receive light to moderate showers.

Similar weather conditions are expected to continue between June 13 and June 15, with intermittent rainfall, thunderstorms, hail and strong winds of up to 50 kmph at isolated places.
