A 16-year-old Indian-origin entrepreneur based in Canada has publicly called out a customer for attempting to "destroy" his startup and reputation following a brief technical misunderstanding. The incident sheds light on the intense pressures and sometimes hostile environments faced by young founders in the tech ecosystem.
The Threatening Customer Email
Earlier this week, Om Patel, the founder of BigIdeasDB, received an aggressive email from a customer named Adam. The customer labeled Patel's product a "scam" after encountering a login issue that redirected him to a localhost. Adam demanded an immediate refund and issued a series of threats if his demand was not met.
The threats included initiating a credit card chargeback, contacting the payment processor Stripe to remove the startup's integration, and posting negative comments on "every Hackernews article and Reddit post" mentioning the platform. The email was sent at 9:45 PM.
The Founder's Swift Response and Refund
Patel responded within four minutes, explaining that an accidental code merge had caused the redirect issue and that a fix was being deployed, which would resolve the problem in under 30 minutes. He assured Adam the product was legitimate and called it a "simple misunderstanding."
Despite the explanation and Patel's immediate offer of a full refund with no questions asked, the customer continued to press his demands. After processing the refund, Patel claims the hostile messages and threats persisted, prompting him to share the entire exchange on social media platform X.
Allegations of Age-Based Bullying
In his post, Patel accused the customer of bullying him because of his youth. "Some people think they can bully you because of your age," he wrote. "Imagine being so entitled that a 30-second technical glitch makes you try to destroy a 16-year-old's entire future."
Patel began learning to code at age 12 during the COVID-19 pandemic and launched BigIdeasDB in early 2024. His platform analyzes user complaints from sources like G2, App Store reviews, and Reddit to help entrepreneurs discover validated startup ideas. To date, the venture has generated over CAD $23,000 in revenue.
