The state anti-corruption bureau (ACB) in Gurgaon arrested a woman head constable on Friday for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000. The constable, posted at the Manesar women's police station, was accused of taking the money to remove family members of an accused from a marital dispute case.
The following day, Police Commissioner Sibash Kabiraj transferred the station house officer (SHO), Neha Rathi, of the same police station to Police Lines. He also ordered a departmental inquiry into supervisory lapses.
The accused, identified as head constable Kavita, was caught in a sting operation. A man had complained to the ACB that she demanded the money to delete the names of his brothers, Balram and Mukesh, from a case filed by his wife. The case involved the man and other family members and was registered at the women's police station. After verifying the allegations, the ACB set up a trap and arrested her while she was allegedly accepting the bribe.
The ACB registered a case against Kavita under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act (demanding or accepting bribes) and Section 308(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (extortion). She was produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody.
Police officials stated that Kabiraj viewed the incident as a failure of supervision at the station level. The departmental inquiry will examine the circumstances of the alleged bribery and determine whether any supervisory lapses occurred. It will also assess if further action is warranted against other personnel.
“The department follows a zero-tolerance policy against corruption. Strict departmental action will be taken against any police personnel found involved in corruption or irregularities,” Kabiraj said.
