In a significant push for West Bengal's technology ambitions, State IT and Electronics Minister Babul Supriyo conducted a review of the Bengal Silicon Valley Tech Hub in New Town, Kolkata, on Thursday. The minister's visit highlighted the rapid progress at the site, with a special focus on the upcoming large-scale project by IT major LTI Mindtree.
Massive Investment and Infrastructure Takes Shape
During the inspection, Minister Supriyo revealed substantial details about the scale of development. He stated that 41 firms have been allotted land within the valley. Out of these, buildings for 7 companies are already complete, while construction is actively underway for 31 others. The cumulative investment flowing into the hub is monumental.
The spotlight was firmly on LTI Mindtree, which was allotted a substantial 18.9 acres of land. The company's project envisions a sprawling IT campus with a total of six towers to be built in phases. The overall built-up area for this single campus is estimated to be a massive 3.7 lakh square feet, backed by a projected investment ranging between Rs 2,000 crore and Rs 2,500 crore.
Phased Rollout and Employment Potential
The construction is progressing at a brisk pace. According to the minister's on-site assessment, Phase 1, comprising the first two towers, is likely to be completed by April or May of this year. This initial phase alone is expected to create space for nearly 7,000 IT professionals.
The development plan doesn't stop there. Work on Phase II, which will add two more towers, is expected to commence shortly. The target for completing this second phase is set for April 2027. When fully developed, the entire LTI Mindtree campus is projected to become a powerhouse of employment, capable of housing approximately 25,000 IT professionals.
A Major Boost for Kolkata's Tech Ecosystem
Minister Babul Supriyo emphasized the transformative impact of this project. He confirmed that three tech firms, including LTI Mindtree, are set to start operations at the Bengal Silicon Valley soon. The completion of such large-scale projects is strategically designed to solidify the Bengal Silicon Valley's position as a premier IT and technology employment hub in Eastern India.
The influx of thousands of high-skilled jobs and billions in investment signifies a strong vote of confidence in Kolkata's and West Bengal's growing infrastructure and talent pool. This development marks a crucial step in the state's journey to become a formidable competitor in the national IT landscape.
