Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Launch in Jan 2026: Top 10 Facts on Route, Fare & Features
Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Launch: Route, Fare, Features

Indian Railways is on the cusp of launching a revolutionary addition to its fleet, with the much-anticipated Vande Bharat Sleeper train set to begin operations in the coming weeks. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the inaugural service, marking a significant leap in long-distance overnight travel within the country.

Route, Launch Date, and Key Specifications

The maiden journey for this advanced train will connect the northeastern hub of Guwahati in Assam to Howrah in Kolkata, West Bengal. The launch is scheduled for the second half of January 2026. Designed as a 16-coach, fully air-conditioned rake, it will accommodate 823 passengers. The coach composition includes 11 AC 3-tier coaches, 4 AC 2-tier coaches, and one luxurious AC 1st class coach.

Passenger-Centric Features and Superior Comfort

Engineered to surpass the Rajdhani Express experience, the Vande Bharat Sleeper introduces several passenger-friendly innovations. The berths are ergonomically designed with improved cushioning, and a redesigned ladder facilitates easier access to upper berths. A major highlight is the enhanced ride quality, achieved through superior suspension systems and advanced noise reduction technology, ensuring a peaceful journey.

The train sets a new benchmark in onboard sanitation with modular bio-vacuum toilets, similar to those used in aircraft. Passengers in the AC 1st coach will have access to a shower cubicle, and the train includes a divyangjan-friendly toilet. For safety, it is equipped with the indigenous KAVACH anti-collision system and an advanced aerosol-based fire detection and suppression mechanism.

Speed, Efficiency, and Ticket Pricing

As a semi-high-speed, self-propelled train set, the Vande Bharat Sleeper can achieve a maximum speed of 180 kmph, with an operational speed of 160 kmph. Its faster acceleration and deceleration, coupled with energy-efficient regenerative braking, will lead to reduced travel times. However, its actual speed on the Guwahati-Kolkata corridor will depend on existing track infrastructure.

The fare structure for the inaugural route has been announced. A one-way ticket in the AC 3-tier coach will start at Rs 2,300. For AC 2-tier, the fare is set at Rs 3,000, while the AC 1st class will cost Rs 3,600 per passenger.

The train's cutting-edge technology was recently demonstrated in a trial video shared by Minister Vaishnaw, where glasses of water remained perfectly steady without spilling even at a high speed of 180 kmph, showcasing exceptional stability. With its aerodynamic bullet train-like exterior, automatic doors, and driver cabins at both ends for quick turnaround, the Vande Bharat Sleeper is poised to redefine overnight rail travel in India.
