PM Modi Declares HCL-Foxconn Chip Plant a Historic Win-Win for India's Tech Ambitions
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has hailed the establishment of chip manufacturing in India as a definitive win-win scenario, asserting that the HCL-Foxconn semiconductor facility marks a monumental shift in the nation's technological trajectory. His remarks were delivered during the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the new chip factory in Uttar Pradesh.
Strategic Push Toward Global Chip Powerhouse Status
This initiative signals an aggressive national drive to reduce dependence on imported foreign technology and to firmly establish India as a global "chip powerhouse." In his address, Modi emphasized the broader implications of this development.
"Today, the arrival of giant corporations like Foxconn to India and their collaboration in chip manufacturing sends a powerful global message," the Prime Minister stated. "A democratic nation like India stands as a reliable partner to the world. India's growing involvement in any value chain will enhance the resilience of that chain. Therefore, India's identity as the factory of the world represents a win-win situation for both India and other nations across the globe."
Details of the Joint Venture and Production Scale
The project, a joint venture officially named India Chip Private Limited, will see an investment of Rs 3,700 crore. It is located at the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) near the upcoming Jewar Airport. Upon becoming operational in 2028, the plant is projected to manufacture an impressive 3.6 crore chips per month.
IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the context of this achievement. "Over the past 11 years, the Prime Minister has transformed India into a powerhouse of electronics manufacturing. India now ranks third among nations exporting electronics. This plant will produce 3.6 crore chips monthly. The core component of the digital screens you see will now be manufactured in Jewar," Vaishnaw explained.
Semiconductors: The 'Soul' of Modern India's Progress
In a virtual address, Prime Minister Modi underscored that semiconductors constitute the "soul" of every modern necessity—ranging from artificial intelligence and 5G networks to electric vehicles and advanced defense equipment.
"The vision of Viksit Bharat (Developed India) will only be realized when India achieves self-reliance," Modi declared. "When India's chips are 'Made in India,' we will no longer need to look outward for our modern equipment. Our advancement across every sector will proceed without impediment."
Economic Impact and Job Creation
According to reports from news agency PTI, the semiconductor project is anticipated to generate more than 3,500 direct and indirect employment opportunities. It is expected to foster robust local supply chains and attract diverse partners across the semiconductor ecosystem. The facility is engineered to process up to 20,000 wafers each month, thereby strengthening a resilient and self-sufficient chip supply chain within India.
This strategic move not only aims to secure technological sovereignty but also to catalyze economic growth, positioning India at the forefront of the global semiconductor industry.
