The stage is set for a grand celebration of science as Chandigarh hosted the curtain-raising event for the 11th India International Science Festival (IISF) 2025. Officials and scientists gathered at the Meteorological Centre to outline the ambitious plans for the upcoming festival, which promises to be a cornerstone event for promoting scientific temper and innovation across the nation.
Unveiling the Vision for IISF 2025
Surender Paul, Director of the Met Centre in Chandigarh, kicked off the proceedings by offering a tantalizing preview of the diverse array of events scheduled for the festival. His insights set the tone for a discussion focused on creating a impactful public engagement with science.
Following him, Akash Pandey, the Organising Secretary of VIBHA Chandigarh, took the audience through the rich history and evolution of the IISF. He elaborated on the festival's growing significance as a national platform that bridges the gap between the scientific community and the public.
Anoop Mahajan, a Scientist-F from IITM Pune, provided depth to the conversation by detailing the core objectives of IISF 2025. He placed special emphasis on the powerful theme, 'Vigyan Se Samruddhi: For Aatmanirbhar Bharat'. Mahajan explained how this theme is designed to inspire a culture of innovation and critical scientific thinking among citizens, thereby fueling India's journey towards technological self-reliance.
Engaging the Next Generation
A highlight of the curtain-raiser was the active interaction between scientists and school students. Scientists dedicated time to encourage young minds to explore fundamental scientific concepts and to nurture their innate curiosity about the world.
Students received a unique, hands-on introduction to the world of meteorology. They were shown various meteorological instruments and were explained the techniques behind weather forecasting. This practical exposure aimed to demonstrate the real-world applications of scientific principles, making science tangible and exciting for the attendees.
Strategies for Nationwide Participation
The event also served as a strategic planning session. A significant discussion was held on formulating effective strategies to expand the festival's outreach and ensure maximum participation from all corners of the country for IISF 2025. The goal is to make the festival a truly inclusive and national scientific movement.
A Collaborative National Effort
The curtain-raiser witnessed robust participation, drawing 250 attendees. The audience comprised a distinguished mix of scientists and officers from premier institutions including VIBHA Chandigarh, IITM Pune, PGI, IMTECH, IISER, CSIR, and DGRE. They were joined by teachers, eager students, and the staff of the host Met Centre in Chandigarh.
IISF 2025 is a joint endeavor, organized collaboratively by the Ministry of Earth Sciences, various other science ministries and Government of India departments, and Vigyan Bharati (VIBHA). This partnership underscores the festival's importance as a government-backed initiative for science-led development.
