Begusarai Railway Station Launches AI Tatkal & Stalls for Rs 81 Lakh NFR
Begusarai Station Gets AI Tatkal & 10 Modular Stalls

In a significant move to enhance passenger experience and generate additional income, the Indian Railways has rolled out a pioneering experimental model at Begusarai station. This initiative, under the Sonepur division of the East Central Railway (ECR), combines modern retail with cutting-edge technology to serve travelers better.

Modern Stalls to Boost Revenue and Convenience

The railways has installed 10 modern modular commercial stalls within the Begusarai station premises. Talking to the media on Thursday, Sonepur divisional railway manager (DRM) Amit Saran explained that these stalls are designed to cater to both rail passengers and local residents living near the station.

The stalls offer a wide range of daily essentials, including:

  • Daily provisions and groceries
  • Textiles and clothing
  • Electronics and mobile handsets
  • Items for religious ceremonies ('puja' items)
  • Modular furniture

DRM Saran highlighted that the modular furniture stall is the first of its kind in the entire East Central Railway zone, making Begusarai a pioneer. This commercial project is aimed at generating approximately Rs 81 lakh in non-fare revenue annually. The modern design ensures efficient use of space, a contemporary look, and an improved customer experience, while also creating local employment opportunities.

AI-Powered 'Digital Mitra' Ends Tatkal Queues

In a parallel technological upgrade, Begusarai station has become the first in the ECR to launch an AI-based passenger reservation system (PRS) counter called 'Digital Mitra' specifically for Tatkal bookings. Sonepur senior divisional commercial manager Raushan Kumar stated that this system is designed to eliminate the long queues that typically form during peak booking hours.

The new process is seamless and secure. Passengers can now book Tatkal tickets for both AC and non-AC classes using face recognition technology linked with Aadhaar authentication. Once a passenger's identity is verified through this biometric system, the booking process becomes faster and requires minimal manual intervention.

Senior DCM Kumar emphasized that these AI-driven counters will ensure greater transparency, fairness, and efficiency in the Tatkal booking process, which has often been criticized for misuse and procedural delays.

A Major Shift in Station Space Utilization

This dual initiative at Begusarai represents a strategic shift in how the Indian Railways utilizes station space. It moves beyond core transportation services to create integrated hubs of commerce and convenience. The focus on non-fare revenue is crucial for the railways' financial sustainability, allowing it to invest further in passenger amenities and infrastructure.

By providing easy access to daily needs and a hassle-free, transparent ticketing system, the East Central Railway aims to significantly improve the travel experience for the thousands of passengers who use Begusarai station. The success of this experimental model could pave the way for its replication at other major stations across the country.
