Motorola has officially begun building anticipation for its next-generation smartphone series in the Indian market. The Lenovo-owned brand is teasing the upcoming Motorola Edge 70 series, showcasing it in three distinct colour options. While the company has played coy on the exact launch date, industry leaks suggest a potential debut around 15 December.
The Thinnest Edge Yet: A Pencil-Thin Profile
Motorola is putting the device's sleek design front and centre as its primary selling proposition. A dedicated microsite on Flipkart visually compares the Edge 70 to a standard pencil. The campaign highlights that while a pencil measures about 7mm in thickness, the new Edge 70 trumps it with an astonishingly slim profile of just 5.99mm. This move comes in a year that has seen several brands experiment with ultra-slim form factors, with mixed commercial success.
Earlier in 2024, Samsung launched the Edge 25 Slim and Apple introduced the iPhone Air. However, rumours indicate that neither company may rush with sequels. Another contender, the Tecno Pova Slim 5G, also entered the fray with a 5.95mm frame, though its sales performance remains unclear. Motorola is now stepping into this niche, betting on design to captivate consumers.
Motorola Edge 70: Expected Specifications and Features
Since the Motorola Edge 70 was launched in select global markets in October, its specifications are largely known. Indian consumers can expect a powerful and feature-rich device.
The phone is expected to sport a 6.67-inch 1.5K pOLED display with a smooth 120Hz refresh rate and an exceptionally bright peak of 4,500 nits, protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 7i. Under the hood, it will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 processor, coupled with up to 12GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage. It will run the latest Android 16 operating system out of the box.
For photography enthusiasts, the Edge 70 boasts a capable dual-camera system on the rear, led by a 50MP primary sensor with Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS). It is paired with a 50MP ultra-wide-angle camera offering a 120-degree field of view. Selfies and video calls will be handled by a 50MP front-facing camera. Both front and rear setups support 4K video recording at 30fps.
Durability is a key focus, with the device offering an IP68 + IP69 rating for water and dust resistance, along with MIL-STD-810H military-grade certification. Keeping the lights on is a sizeable 4,800mAh battery that supports 68W wired fast charging and 15W wireless charging.
Pricing and Market Expectations
The pricing strategy will be crucial for the Edge 70's success in the competitive Indian mid-range segment. Its predecessor, the Edge 60, started at ₹25,999 in India. However, due to industry-wide increases in memory component costs, the new model is likely to see a price hike. Analysts and leaks suggest the Motorola Edge 70 could start at around the ₹30,000 mark in India, positioning it against a slew of popular rivals.
As the teaser campaign gains momentum, all eyes are on Motorola to confirm the launch date and finalise the price. The combination of a headline-grabbing slim design, robust specifications, and Motorola's clean software experience could make the Edge 70 series a notable contender in the year-end smartphone rush.
