Residents across several parts of Mumbai's western suburbs, including Andheri and Borivli, experienced recurring power outages over the weekend, with many reporting sleepless nights due to the disruptions. Social media was abuzz with complaints, notably from actress Rupali Ganguly, who tweeted early Sunday morning about the ordeal.
Actress Rupali Ganguly Voices Frustration
In her tweet, Ganguly wrote, 'Power outage in our building and two other buildings since last night … the lights kept going and coming but now it’s been gone since 1 am … chatbots have been saying the issue will be resolved in 34 mins since the last 4 hours and now says there is no outage at all! .. and this is happening in the financial capital..'
Residents Demand Immediate Action
Another aggrieved consumer tweeted, 'It’s the story from the last four days -- there is no action being taken by any of the staff. Need an immediate solution on this, power cuts that too in the night, and the irony is for the whole night for four days. Need an immediate solution for this.' A Versova resident added, 'No electricity since the whole night.. what torture the residents have been subjected to.'
Power Utility Cites Rising Demand
A source from a power utility explained that system data indicated a year-on-year increase in the heat index amid high humidity, leading to higher electricity demand due to increased air-conditioning use. The source noted that consumers did not alter their power demand, keeping the load high and straining the distribution network, resulting in outages. Mumbai recently recorded an all-time high peak demand of 4,558 MW.
Recurring Issues in Borivali and Beyond
Residents of Kastur Park in Borivali reported power failures and voltage fluctuations over the past two days. Another consumer demanded compensation, stating, 'We need compensation as we have gone through mental stress due to power failure the past 3 days.' Power utility companies were unavailable for comment.
