Mumbai: Following a tragic accident that claimed three lives near Parsi Gymkhana on Marine Drive, corporator Makarand Narwekar has written to the Mumbai Police and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) demanding the barricading of one lane on Marine Drive from Nariman Point to Girgaum Chowpatty. The move aims to ensure safe walking, jogging, and cycling for citizens.
Background of the Demand
Narwekar highlighted that Marine Drive and its adjoining areas are frequented by a large number of citizens for morning walks, jogging, and cycling. "In the past, barricading was implemented along one lane from Nariman Point to Chowpatty to provide a safe space for these activities," Narwekar stated. He emphasized the need to reinstate this measure to prevent further accidents and protect pedestrians and cyclists.
Details of the Proposal
The corporator has requested the authorities to consider barricading one lane specifically for non-motorized users during peak morning hours. This would create a dedicated corridor for exercise enthusiasts, reducing the risk of collisions with vehicular traffic. The proposal also includes proper signage and enforcement to ensure compliance.
- The barricaded lane would stretch from Nariman Point to Girgaum Chowpatty.
- It would be operational during morning hours when footfall is highest.
- Similar measures have been successfully implemented in the past.
Public Support and Next Steps
Residents and regular visitors to Marine Drive have expressed support for the initiative, citing safety concerns. The Mumbai Police and BMC are expected to review the proposal and consult with traffic experts before making a decision. Narwekar has urged swift action to avoid further tragedies.
