Surat: In a notable display of solidarity with the common citizen, Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat traveled by a Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) bus from Adajan bus stand in Surat to Jinod village in Olpad taluka on Saturday. The governor purchased his own ticket and made the payment digitally, highlighting his support for cashless transactions.
Undertaking the journey during peak summer, with temperatures crossing 40 degrees Celsius, the governor's decision was widely seen as a gesture to connect with the people and reinforce confidence in public systems. During the trip, Devvrat engaged with fellow passengers, inquiring about their well-being and listening to their concerns, while experiencing the public transport system firsthand. Many passengers expressed surprise at finding the state's first citizen traveling alongside them.
Governor's Regular Engagements
This is not the first time the governor has chosen public transport. He has previously traveled by ST buses on multiple occasions. Devvrat regularly visits one taluka every week under the Gram Kalyan programme. During these visits, he participates in tree plantation drives under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign, joins village cleanliness activities, and shares meals with families across communities.
Promoting Digital India
By making a digital payment for his bus ticket, the governor reinforced the government's push for a cashless economy. His actions serve as an encouragement for citizens to adopt digital payment methods in their daily lives.
The governor's journey also drew attention to the importance of public transport and the need to improve its quality and accessibility. His interactions with passengers provided valuable insights into the challenges faced by commuters, which could inform policy decisions.
