The question of whether the Dallas Cowboys will use the franchise tag on wide receiver George Pickens looms large. According to CBS Sports' Bryan DeArdo, tagging Pickens could be a recipe for disaster due to his history of self-sabotage when things do not go his way.
Trade Proposal: Pickens to Buffalo
The Cowboys' best options are to sign Pickens long-term or trade him. Pickens' 2025 stats with the Pittsburgh Steelers were impressive: 93 receptions for 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns in 17 games. However, his 2024 numbers were lower: 59 catches for 900 yards and three touchdowns in 14 games.
To avoid another drama-filled season, trading Pickens may be the best move. ClutchPoints' Enzo Flojo proposed a deal sending Pickens to the Buffalo Bills for wide receiver Keon Coleman and a 2027 first-round pick. Originally, a 2026 fourth-round pick was included, but that is no longer possible.
How Pickens Would Fit in Buffalo
Pairing Pickens with DJ Moore and Khalil Shakir would create a versatile receiving corps. Moore is a route technician, Shakir is reliable, and Pickens would be a gravitational force demanding attention. Quarterback Josh Allen could exploit Pickens' elite catch radius and physicality for high-impact plays and red-zone dominance, potentially combining for double-digit touchdowns.
Keon Coleman's Status with Bills
Despite the trade proposal, the Bills may keep Coleman. Owner Terry Pegula noted the coaching staff drafted Coleman, not general manager Brandon Beane. However, ESPN's Alaina Getzenberg reported the Bills have hit a reset button with Coleman. "We shut down trade inquiries. Our intention is for Keon to be here," she quoted. Thus, Coleman might not be part of any Pickens trade.
NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported that Pickens wants a long-term contract or a trade, and the Cowboys have been clear they will not offer one. Whether the Bills pursue Pickens remains to be seen.
