The Goa police have successfully dismantled an illegal call centre operating in the Porvorim area, arresting 26 individuals for their alleged involvement in defrauding US citizens. The operation, which took place on Wednesday, was conducted by the Cyber Crime Cell of the Goa Police, following a tip-off about the illicit activities.
Details of the Raid
The raid was carried out at a premises in Porvorim, where the call centre was functioning under the guise of a legitimate business. During the operation, the police seized several computers, mobile phones, and other electronic equipment used in the scam. The arrested individuals include both operators and managers who were allegedly part of a larger network targeting vulnerable individuals abroad.
Modus Operandi
According to the police, the call centre was involved in a tech support scam, where the accused would call US citizens pretending to be representatives of well-known technology companies. They would convince the victims that their computers were infected with viruses or had other technical issues, and then charge them for fake repairs or software. The scam is estimated to have caused significant financial losses to numerous victims in the United States.
The police have registered a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act. Investigations are ongoing to trace the masterminds behind the operation and to identify any other locations involved in similar activities.
Growing Concern Over Cyber Crime
This incident highlights the growing problem of cyber crime in India, particularly in states like Goa which are popular tourist destinations. The police have urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities. They have also advised the public to be cautious of unsolicited calls and emails offering technical support or other services.
The arrested individuals are currently in police custody and will be produced before a local court. The authorities are also working with international agencies to gather more evidence and to inform the affected US citizens about the progress of the case.
This crackdown is part of a larger effort by the Goa Police to combat cyber crime and protect potential victims from such fraudulent schemes. The police have assured that they will continue to take strict action against those involved in illegal activities that target innocent people.
