In a significant breakthrough, the Faridabad police have dismantled a large-scale sextortion racket, leading to the arrest of five individuals from Jaipur, Rajasthan. The accused allegedly targeted victims by luring them into compromising online interactions and subsequently blackmailing them for money.
How the Racket Operated
The gang reportedly used fake social media profiles, often posing as attractive women, to befriend unsuspecting men. Once trust was established, they would coax the victims into video calls where they were recorded in intimate situations. The criminals then threatened to leak the footage unless the victims paid hefty sums.
Arrests and Investigation
Acting on a tip-off, a team from the Faridabad police cyber cell conducted a raid in Jaipur, apprehending the five suspects. Preliminary investigations reveal that the racket had extorted lakhs of rupees from multiple victims across several states. Police have seized mobile phones, laptops, and other digital evidence from the accused.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Ravi Kumar, 28, Mohit Sharma, 31, Priya Singh, 24, Anil Meena, 35, and Deepak Joshi, 29. They are being brought to Faridabad for further interrogation. Authorities are also probing possible links to larger cybercrime networks.
Police Advisory
The Faridabad police have urged citizens to exercise caution while interacting with strangers online. They advise against sharing personal information or engaging in video calls with unknown individuals. Victims of such scams are encouraged to report incidents immediately to the cyber crime helpline.
This operation highlights the growing menace of sextortion in India and the efforts of law enforcement to combat cyber crimes. Further investigations are ongoing to identify more accomplices and victims.
