Indian-origin entrepreneur Vivek Wadhwa has stated that anti-India attacks on the social media platform X are spiraling out of control after he became a target for his views on the H-1B visa program. Wadhwa recently commented on a post regarding a court ruling that invalidated the Donald Trump administration's $100,000 fee for H-1B visas, which drew him into a significant controversy.
Senator Murkowski's stance on H-1B visas
Senator Lisa Murkowski praised the court order, describing it as timely, particularly because schools in Alaska are currently in the midst of their hiring season and often rely on H-1B visas. She stated, "Many school districts in rural and remote parts of the state rely on the H-1B visa program to bring quality teachers to their communities. In Alaska, this isn't a partisan issue: the state legislature unanimously passed a resolution last month urging the federal government to waive the fee for educators."
Wadhwa's initial comment and backlash
In response to Murkowski's statement, Wadhwa questioned why Americans are not interested in teaching jobs in Alaska, yet complain about jobs being taken by H-1B visa holders. He highlighted the apparent hypocrisy, writing, "Dear Anti-immigrants constantly crying that foreigners are taking American jobs: Why aren't you teaching in rural Alaska? Hundreds of positions sit empty. Remote districts are importing teachers from overseas on H-1Bs because you won't move there. You don't actually want those jobs; you just don't want qualified foreigners to have them. Complete hypocrisy."
However, Wadhwa's observation was twisted and misinterpreted as if he was urging Americans to go teach in Alaska while allowing Indian H-1B migrants to occupy all Fortune 500 jobs and careers.
Wadhwa's clarification and condemnation of racism
Wadhwa retorted that he never made such statements and clarified that he is not even a supporter of the H-1B visa program. He claimed that he was targeted solely because of his Indian origin, despite never having lived in India. He said, "The anti-India attacks are getting completely out of control. For the record: I've never lobbied for H-1B visas and I don't even like the program. I've repeatedly said the massive green card backlog it creates amounts to indentured servitude. I've also never really lived in India. This is open racism."
