Kanpur's AIISH Satellite Centre: A New Hub for Speech and Hearing Healthcare
In a significant development for healthcare, education, and research in North India, Kanpur is poised to gain a national identity in the field of speech and hearing disorders with the establishment of the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH) Satellite Centre. This new facility, currently under construction in the Surar area, will serve as an extension of the renowned All India Institute of Speech and Hearing based in Mysore.
The project spans approximately 81,000 square metres and carries a budget of ₹180 crore. It is scheduled for completion by October 31, 2026. Once operational, it will be the second institute of its kind in India and the first in North India, significantly reducing the reliance on the Mysore facility for patients and researchers from the northern regions.
State-of-the-Art Infrastructure and Facilities
The centre will be equipped with cutting-edge infrastructure mirroring that of the Mysore institute. This includes advanced audiology laboratories, speech therapy units, hearing assessment facilities, and specialised training and research resources. The campus will also feature separate hostel accommodations for 102 male and 102 female students, catering to learners from across the country.
Construction of the medical block and pre-primary block is progressing swiftly. The pre-primary unit will focus on early identification and intervention for speech and hearing issues among young children, addressing these challenges at a crucial developmental stage.
Official Oversight and Implementation
District Magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh recently inspected the construction site to review the pace and quality of work. He directed officials to ensure timely completion without compromising on standards and emphasized regular monitoring of the project. The DM highlighted that the institute would play a crucial role not only in providing advanced healthcare services but also in promoting specialised education and research in speech and hearing sciences.
The project is being implemented by NPCC Limited under the aegis of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, with technical quality supervision provided by IIT (BHU) Varanasi. This collaboration ensures adherence to high standards of construction and functionality.
Once completed, the AIISH Satellite Centre in Kanpur will mark a milestone in healthcare accessibility and academic excellence for North India, offering world-class services in speech and hearing disorders.
