Revolutionizing Retail with Conversational Commerce

Gap's Chief Technology Officer, Sven Gerjets, highlighted the shift from traditional keyword searches to conversational interactions in an interview with CNBC. He emphasized the importance of relevance in AI-driven queries, such as users seeking advice for wedding attire or job interview styles. "It's not just keyword search anymore, right? It's conversations, and so we need to be relevant to that," Gerjets stated, underscoring the company's commitment to enhancing customer engagement through AI.

Under this partnership, when users browse Gemini for clothing recommendations, they will encounter Gap products and can complete transactions directly on the platform. Product information is supplied by Gap to ensure accuracy and maintain control over the customer experience, while payments are processed via Google Pay, with Gap handling order fulfillment. The feature is currently in testing and is expected to roll out imminently, reflecting retailers' efforts to keep pace with AI-driven shopping trends.

Introducing AI Sizing Tools and Competitive Landscape

Beyond the Gemini integration, Gap is preparing to launch an AI-powered sizing tool called Bold Metrics to assist customers in selecting the correct sizes online. This initiative comes as competition in the fashion retail market intensifies and the landscape becomes more fragmented. Retailers are increasingly adapting to how AI platforms surface products, with structured data being crucial for visibility in chat-based search results. Brands risk missing sales opportunities if their product data is not AI-interpretable.

While many companies are exploring AI applications, Gap's collaboration with Gemini represents an early example of such deep integration. Gerjets views this as an initial step in a broader journey, with plans to evolve the experience based on customer feedback. Currently, features like loyalty account linking or point redemption are not supported, which may limit existing customers, but Gerjets indicated these could be added in the future. "We'll continue to evolve the experience and bring the things forward that the customers want," he said, describing it as part of the roadmap toward perfecting agentic commerce.

Challenges and Opportunities in AI Shopping

The move aligns with broader industry trends, as OpenAI has previously explored similar partnerships with retailers like Walmart and Etsy, though it later stepped back from enabling in-app checkout. While more users are turning to AI platforms for product discovery, this segment remains relatively small, and comfort levels with completing purchases directly on these platforms vary. Some consumers may hesitate to input payment details into AI systems, preferring retailer apps where loyalty points and stored methods are available. However, since Google already stores payment data for many users, Gemini could offer a smoother transaction experience compared to newer platforms like ChatGPT.

Gemini also boasts features such as real-time product data, support for multi-item carts, and evolving loyalty program integrations, giving it an edge in the competitive space. Gerjets noted that Gemini's Universal Commerce Protocol focuses on merchant control, while OpenAI's Agentic Commerce Protocol emphasizes discovery. "This space is moving so quickly... We're all evolving and learning together," he added, highlighting the uncertainty of the future landscape and Gap's strategy to engage with multiple platforms to meet customers wherever they are.
