Apple iPhone 19e May Feature 120Hz LTPO Display in Major Upgrade for 2028

Apple could bring a significant display enhancement to its entry-level iPhone lineup with the iPhone 19e, according to a recent report by ZDNet Korea. The device, which is rumored to launch in 2028, may incorporate an LTPO OLED display that supports a 120Hz refresh rate. This feature is currently exclusive to higher-end iPhone models, making this potential upgrade a notable shift in Apple's strategy for its more affordable smartphones.

ProMotion Technology on Affordable iPhones

If introduced, this would mark the first time Apple offers ProMotion technology on its budget-friendly iPhone models. Currently, the iPhone 17e utilizes a 60Hz LTPS display, and the upcoming iPhone 18e is also expected to continue with the same display technology. The adoption of LTPO panels could represent a substantial leap forward in display quality and performance for Apple's entry-level devices.

Development of New LTPO+ Display Technology

According to the report, the transition to LTPO panels may hinge on Apple's development of a new LTPO+ display technology, which is anticipated to improve power efficiency significantly. Apple is reportedly planning to implement LTPO+ in its premium devices first, including future versions of the iPhone Air and foldable iPhones. This strategic move could subsequently allow standard LTPO panels to be utilized in more affordable models like the iPhone 19e.

Timeline and Potential Delays

The report suggests that this display upgrade could materialize in 2028, but it remains unconfirmed at this stage. If the development of the new display technology encounters delays, the rollout of LTPO panels to lower-cost iPhone models might also be postponed further. This uncertainty underscores the dynamic nature of Apple's product development and supply chain strategies.

Recent Launch of iPhone 17e

Earlier this month, Apple launched the iPhone 17e, the most affordable member of its iPhone 17 family. Priced at Rs 64,900 in India, the phone introduces several key features:

  • MagSafe wireless charging with Qi2 support, enabling 15W wireless charging—double the 7.5W on the iPhone 16e.
  • The A19 chip for enhanced performance.
  • Double the base storage compared to its predecessor.
  • Available in black, white, and a new soft pink color, with storage options of 256GB and 512GB.

The handset boasts a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display and features a single 48MP Fusion camera, offering an optical-quality 2x telephoto crop alongside improved Portrait mode with automatic depth capture. Video recording supports 4K Dolby Vision at up to 60fps. The selfie camera remains at 12MP, without an upgrade to the 18MP sensor found on the iPhone 17 and iPhone Air.

This launch represents a meaningful step up from last year's iPhone 16e, setting a precedent for future enhancements in Apple's entry-level lineup.
