Delhi govt to use AI to boost governance, service delivery

The Delhi government is planning to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into its administrative framework to strengthen governance and improve service delivery across various departments. The initiative will involve collaboration with technology companies, startups, and research institutions to develop AI-based solutions for key sectors such as healthcare, education, transport, urban planning, and air quality monitoring.

Focus on Proven AI Solutions

The initiative aims to identify proven, market-ready technologies that can first be piloted and later scaled up across departments. Only AI solutions with at least one successful implementation will be considered. This move is expected to enhance efficiency and responsiveness in government systems, ensuring that citizens receive better and faster services.

According to an expression of interest document issued by the IT department, the government plans to integrate AI tools to improve governance outcomes across multiple domains. An official stated, “We are committed to promoting the adoption of AI and emerging technologies to enhance governance, improve citizen services, and drive innovation across sectors. A tender has been floated to seek interest from technology companies, startups, academic institutions, research organisations, and industry bodies to showcase their AI-based products, solutions, projects and use cases relevant to public service delivery and governance.”

Initial Focus Areas

The official added that the objective is to identify innovative AI solutions that can be adopted or piloted at the departmental level. “Initially, we are focusing on smart governance and public service delivery, urban planning and smart cities, environment and air quality monitoring, health and health services management, transport and mobility, and education,” the official said.

The government will review responses from a wide range of stakeholders, including AI solution providers, startups, academic and research institutions, industry associations, innovation labs, system integrators, and technology consulting firms. This broad outreach aims to tap into diverse expertise and foster innovative approaches to public service challenges.

Pilot Projects and Demonstration

“We want to identify practical AI applications that can be tested through pilot projects within departments. Participants will be required to demonstrate their tools before a government panel and outline their technology, current usage and potential benefits,” the official added. This hands-on evaluation process ensures that only the most effective and scalable solutions are selected for wider implementation.

The Delhi government's proactive approach to adopting AI reflects a growing trend among state administrations to leverage cutting-edge technology for better governance. By focusing on proven solutions and rigorous pilot testing, the initiative aims to minimize risks and maximize positive outcomes for citizens.
