Canada Raises Red Flag Over Anthropic's Claude Mythos AI Model
Canada has joined the growing chorus of nations expressing serious concerns about the cybersecurity implications of advanced artificial intelligence systems. The focal point of this alarm is Anthropic's powerful new AI model, Claude Mythos, which has prompted urgent discussions among Canadian regulators, major banks, and government officials.
Government Takes Proactive Stance
The federal government of Canada has confirmed it is treating this issue with the utmost seriousness. Officials have pointed to the model's demonstrated capabilities, which cybersecurity experts describe as potentially dangerous if they fall into the wrong hands. A new report from The Globe and Mail reveals that AI Minister Evan Solomon has scheduled a high-level meeting with executives from Anthropic. This follows earlier discussions between the company and Canada's Innovation, Science and Economic Development department.
"We are taking this issue seriously and that's why we're meeting with representatives from Anthropic," stated spokesperson Sofia Ouslis in an interview with The Globe and Mail. She further emphasized that Canada welcomes Anthropic's decision not to release the Mythos model publicly and advocates for the inclusion of trusted international partners in any future initiatives involving such technology.
Financial Sector Mobilizes in Response
Concerns have permeated Canada's critical financial infrastructure. Executives from the nation's largest banks and top financial regulators recently convened to specifically discuss the cybersecurity risks posed by Claude Mythos. The meeting was organized by the Canadian Financial Sector Resiliency Group (CFRG), chaired by Bank of Canada Chief Operating Officer Alexis Corbett.
Attendees included representatives from the Department of Finance, the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI), and senior executives from Canada's six biggest banks, along with the Desjardins Group. According to the report, Bank of Canada spokesperson Paul Badertscher clarified that this was not an emergency session but rather a 'situational awareness' gathering.
"It can still hold meetings at the request of its members. 'Hey guys, we need to pay attention, there is something going on. Let's get together and talk about this.' That's what this was," Badertscher explained, highlighting the proactive, collaborative approach being taken by the financial sector.
Technical Capabilities Spark Global Fear
The core of the concern lies in the model's demonstrated technical prowess. Claude Mythos has reportedly identified thousands of vulnerabilities across major operating systems and web browsers, raising the specter of highly sophisticated, AI-enabled cyberattacks. Carole Piovesan, a legal expert from INQ Law, issued a stark warning: "In the wrong hands, it is profoundly detrimental from a cybersecurity perspective."
These fears are not confined to Canada. The UK's AI Security Institute has reported that Mythos demonstrated the ability to autonomously exploit complex chains of vulnerabilities. In simulations, it completed multi-step network attacks that would typically take human hackers days to execute. While these simulations were simplified, experts argue the findings highlight the severe risks of technical debt—the accumulated flaws in software that are often patched temporarily rather than fully resolved.
Canadian cybersecurity leader David Shipley offered a dire analogy, comparing the potential crisis to "the tech equivalent of the 2008 financial crisis combined with climate change," and warning of a global-scale "tech debt bankruptcy."
Mounting Calls for Stringent Regulation
The situation has intensified calls for robust regulatory frameworks. Prominent experts, including Nicolas Papernot of the Canadian AI Safety Institute and AI pioneer Yoshua Bengio, argue that leaving release decisions solely to private companies is a dangerous proposition. They are advocating for mandatory third-party audits and coordinated global efforts to evaluate powerful AI models before any public release.
In response, Canada is actively preparing a new national AI strategy, with security positioned as a central pillar. Former government officials have urged the implementation of minimum security standards and mandatory risk assessments for operators of large-scale AI models, aiming to establish guardrails before such technologies become ubiquitous.
