Uber Expands Services in Kerala with New Bike Taxi and Parcel Options
In a significant move to address urban mobility challenges, ride-hailing giant Uber has officially launched its Bike Taxi and Parcel services in the major Kerala cities of Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram. This expansion aims to provide residents with a high-speed, low-cost alternative to navigate the notorious traffic congestion that plagues these metropolitan areas.
Seamless Integration and Affordable Pricing
The new services are fully integrated into the Uber app, offering the same user-friendly interface as existing auto and taxi features. Customers can easily book bike taxis or parcel deliveries through the familiar platform. Rates for bike taxi services start at an incredibly budget-friendly Rs 25 for the first three kilometers, making it an attractive option for short-distance travel.
An Uber spokesperson elaborated, "The revamped service is designed to function seamlessly, allowing customers to book services using the app just like they would for autos or taxis." The services will be available not only within city limits but also in suburban areas. For instance, in Kochi, bike services can be accessed in outskirts such as Fort Kochi, Vypeen, Paravur, and Aluva.
Beyond Passenger Transport: The Parcel Service
In addition to passenger transport, Uber has introduced a Bike Parcel service, enabling residents to send small packages across the city efficiently and cost-effectively. "The service will facilitate residents to send small packages across the city in a cost-effective manner," the spokesperson added, highlighting the dual utility of the new offerings.
Driver Enrollment and Incentives
To support the launch, Uber has begun registering interested two-wheeler owners for the bike taxi service. The company is offering a joining bonus of Rs 1,000 and promises a minimum monthly revenue of Rs 35,000 to boost enrollment. Requirements include providing helmets for commuters and preferring vehicles registered post-2012, with emphasis on recently purchased two-wheelers.
Public Reception and Operational Insights
Early users have noted the cost benefits, though with some trade-offs. Niranjan R, a resident of Tripunithura, shared, "The bike taxi and parcel services are available in the Uber app. However, the waiting time for bike taxi service is more now, while the cost is much cheaper. It will be a good option for commuters during peak hours on congested city roads."
Opposition from Traditional Unions
However, the launch has not been without controversy. Traditional autorickshaw and taxi driver unions, which form a significant part of Kochi's labour force, have expressed immediate concerns. Syamanda Bhadran, district president of the Ernakulam District Autorickshaws Union affiliated with CITU, stated, "The low pricing of bike taxis creates an unfair playing field that threatens our livelihoods. We'll oppose the attempts of the corporate to further eat into our revenue sources. A lot of people have stopped operating hire services even with the coming of online booking auto and taxi services."
Historical Context and Regulatory Approval
This launch marks a pivotal moment after Uber's initial attempt to introduce bike services in Kerala in 2017 was rejected by the state transport department. Authorities had expressed concerns that allowing two-wheeler taxi services could lead to an increase in traffic accidents. However, following the permission of bike taxi services in neighbouring states like Karnataka due to a court order last year, Uber has now secured the necessary approvals.
Transport commissioner C Nagaraju IPS confirmed, "They have submitted all necessary documents and taken the licence now," indicating regulatory clearance for the operations.
This expansion by Uber represents a strategic effort to enhance urban mobility in Kerala, offering innovative solutions while navigating local economic and regulatory landscapes. The services are poised to transform daily commutes and logistics, though they face ongoing scrutiny from established transport sectors.
