PhonePe Introduces RuPay 'On-The-Go' Card for Seamless Transit Payments
Digital payments giant PhonePe has officially launched the RuPay 'On-The-Go' Card, a National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) designed specifically for contactless payments across India's public transportation network. This innovative prepaid card supports the government's ambitious "One Nation One Card" initiative, which aims to create a unified payment system for various transit services nationwide.
How the PhonePe RuPay 'On-The-Go' Card Functions
The RuPay "On-The-Go" Card operates as a prepaid model where funds are securely stored on the card's embedded chip. This unique feature enables commuters to make tap-and-pay transactions even without internet or network connectivity, ensuring reliability in diverse environments. The card comes with specific financial parameters: it can be recharged up to ₹2,000, while any single offline transaction is capped at ₹500. According to PhonePe, the card can be issued to customers immediately upon request.
Initial Rollout and Accessibility
The first phase of this rollout is being conducted in partnership with L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Limited at the Hyderabad Metro system. Commuters can purchase the card directly at Hyderabad Metro ticket counters. The issuance process involves verifying the customer's phone number through a one-time password (OTP), after which a metro agent can issue and top up the card using multiple payment methods including UPI, cash, or bank cards.
Although the initial launch is concentrated in Hyderabad, the card's utility extends far beyond this single city. It can be utilized across other NCMC-enabled transport systems in major metropolitan areas such as Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Bengaluru. This strategic launch represents PhonePe's formal entry into transit-related payment services, with the company expressing plans to expand integration with additional transport operators throughout India.
Additional Digital Services and Company Vision
Beyond the physical card offering, PhonePe has announced that users will also be able to access complementary services through its mobile application. These include digital ticketing solutions, transit passes, and smart card recharge functionalities, creating a comprehensive ecosystem for modern commuters.
Deep Agrawal, Head of Payments at PhonePe, emphasized the card's target audience: "We are excited to launch the PhonePe 'On-The-Go' Card aimed toward crores of consumers who use public transport to commute everyday. This card enables quick 'Tap-and-Pay' transactions at transit providers across the country. It works without the need for internet connectivity via a balance present on the card. It is our first step in integrating our digital wallet ecosystem with national public transport, delivering a secure experience for every commuter and furthering the foundation for national interoperability on the back of the NCMC framework powered by RuPay."
The introduction of this card marks a significant advancement in India's digital payment infrastructure, particularly for the transportation sector. By combining offline functionality with nationwide interoperability, PhonePe's new offering addresses practical challenges faced by daily commuters while aligning with broader governmental initiatives to streamline transit payments across the country.
