The state urban development department (UDD) on Wednesday authorised the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) to undertake heavy engineering, infrastructure, consultancy, and turnkey works both within India and abroad. These assignments will have no monetary or scope limitations.
Government Resolution Details
In a government resolution (GR), the UDD stated that it considers it expedient to leverage MMRC's technical expertise, institutional capability, and experience in the field of complex infrastructure development. The GR specifies that MMRC is authorised to undertake and execute, either directly or through appropriate contractual arrangements, a wide range of projects.
Scope of Authorised Works
The authorised works include heavy civil and infrastructure projects such as construction of tunnels, caverns, underground structures, stations, depots, bridges, viaducts, and other major infrastructure works. Additionally, MMRC can take on consultancy assignments related to metro rail, urban transport, and infrastructure projects, as well as turnkey, EPC, and D&B projects and other allied works in infrastructure development and urban transport. The GR emphasised that these activities will not impose any financial burden on the government.
MMRC's Track Record
MMRC has successfully completed the design, construction, testing, and commissioning of Metro 3, a 33.5-kilometre fully underground corridor comprising 26 underground stations, one at-grade station, and a car depot. It has also been entrusted with the implementation of another underground metro corridor—the 17.5-kilometre Line 11—and is executing various construction projects, including the rehabilitation of project-affected persons. Furthermore, MMRC will undertake the construction of long underground public vestibules totalling 43 kilometres.
