Daltonganj: Latehar district police have busted a new smuggling model in which illicit liquor was concealed under animal feed consignments and transported in bulk, officials said on Saturday.
Acting on a tip-off, Superintendent of Police Kumar Gaurav directed Sub-Divisional Police Officer Sandip Kumar Gupta and his team to intercept the consignment on National Highway 39 near Chandwa. Police stopped two luxury cars and a 12-wheeler truck reportedly moving from Ranchi to Bihar.
While the cars had liquor bottles in their trunks, the truck was loaded with around 200 plastic bags labeled as L-Lysine sulphate 70% animal feed. On closer inspection, the bags contained paddy husk, used as cattle feed, while over 1,100 cartons of English liquor were hidden behind them, police stated.
They added that the intercepted vehicles bore Jharkhand, Odisha, and Rajasthan registration numbers, all of which are under verification.
Five youths aged 20 to 29 were arrested and remanded to judicial custody on May 29. Two others, including the truck driver, fled.
