Gmail, Google Drive, Docs and Other Workspace Apps to Get Major Icon Redesign
Gmail, Google Drive, Docs and Other Workspace Apps to Get Icon Redesign

Google is reportedly working on a major redesign of icons for its Gmail and other Workspace apps, according to a report by 9to5Google. The company is planning a wider update across its Workspace applications, moving away from the previous design approach that used all four company colors in most icons.

New Gradient Colors and Simpler Shapes

The redesign will bring a consistent visual style using gradient colors similar to those seen in Google apps like Search, Maps, and Photos. This change is expected to reflect the growing use of AI features across Google's products. Several Google app icons have already moved to a gradient-based design. The new icons will focus on simpler color schemes and more distinct shapes, removing the background 'page' container seen in many current icons. This will allow larger and clearer icons that are easier to identify. The report said the new design aims to improve color contrast and shape differences for better recognition.

Specific App Changes

Several Workspace apps will see visual updates:

  • Gmail: The envelope-style 'M' icon remains, but with a more rounded design. Red is expected to be the main color.
  • Google Drive: The triangular shape remains, but red may be removed, leaving green, yellow, and blue.
  • Docs, Sheets, Slides: Each app will continue using a single main color, with layout changes reflecting how the apps are used.
  • Google Meet and Chat: These apps may get new shapes and color changes, with Meet using yellow and Chat using green.
  • Google Calendar and Tasks: Both may return to simpler blue-based designs.
  • Google Keep: The light bulb icon will remain, but without a background container.
  • Google Voice, Forms, and Sites: These apps may also see updates in shape and color.

The changes are still based on early information, and Google has not officially announced the redesign.
