The School of Open Learning (SOL) at the University of Delhi has announced that it will offer eight foreign language courses in online mode starting from the 2026–27 academic session. The move has been approved by the university’s Academic Council.
Expanding Access to Language Education
With this initiative, students from across India and abroad will be able to pursue these one-year diploma programmes remotely. SOL officials stated that the decision was made in response to long-standing student demand. The programmes were initially introduced in offline mode last year.
Languages Offered
The courses will be conducted through the Department of Germanic and Romance Studies and the Department of East Asian Studies. Languages under Germanic and Romance Studies include French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, and Italian. East Asian Studies will offer Chinese, Korean, and Japanese.
An official from SOL explained, “The programmes have been designed for remote learning through a digital platform. Classes will be conducted online, offering flexibility in terms of time and access. Students will be able to access video lectures and assignments through the platform. In addition, face-to-face sessions will also be scheduled, with details to be provided on the official portal.”
This move is expected to significantly broaden the reach of language education, allowing learners from diverse geographical locations to gain proficiency in these widely spoken languages. The online format aims to accommodate working professionals and students who may not be able to attend regular in-person classes.
Future Prospects
The University of Delhi’s School of Open Learning has been a pioneer in distance education, and this addition aligns with its mission to provide accessible and flexible learning opportunities. The one-year diploma programmes are designed to equip students with foundational language skills, which can be beneficial for careers in translation, interpretation, international business, tourism, and academia.
Interested candidates are advised to regularly check the official SOL website for updates on admission procedures, eligibility criteria, and fee structures. The university expects a high demand for these courses, given the growing interest in foreign languages among Indian students.
