Customs officials at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in Delhi have successfully intercepted a significant narcotics smuggling attempt, seizing 1.57 kilograms of suspected hydroponic weed valued at approximately Rs 55 lakh from a passenger arriving from Bangkok. The operation took place on June 1, 2026, when the passenger was stopped after clearing the Green Channel at the airport.
Discovery During X-Ray Screening
According to Customs authorities, the passenger's baggage raised suspicions during routine X-ray screening, revealing unusual images that prompted a thorough examination. Upon detailed inspection, officials recovered three vacuum-sealed packets containing a green-colored substance believed to be hydroponic weed, a potent form of cannabis cultivated using water-based techniques without soil.
Official Statement
A Customs official stated, "IGI Airport, New Delhi, have booked a case involving the smuggling of a suspected NDPS substance. A passenger traveling from Bangkok to Delhi was intercepted after crossing the Customs Green Channel." The official further elaborated, "During X-ray screening of the passenger's baggage, suspicious images were detected. A detailed examination of the baggage led to the recovery of three vacuum-sealed packets suspected to contain hydroponic weed (ganja), weighing approximately 1,570 grams. The estimated market value of the seized hydroponic weed is around Rs 55 lakh. Further investigation is underway."
Ongoing Investigation
The seizure highlights the vigilance of Customs officials at IGI Airport in curbing the illegal drug trade. The authorities have initiated a comprehensive investigation to determine the source of the contraband, the intended recipients, and any potential links to larger smuggling networks. The passenger has been taken into custody for questioning, and further legal proceedings are expected under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in preventing the smuggling of high-value narcotics through international airports. Hydroponic weed, known for its high potency, commands a premium price in the illicit market, making it a target for smugglers.
