Bengaluru: The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has abandoned its plan to construct the Veterinary College Metro station, which was initially envisioned as part of the Sarjapur–Hebbal Namma Metro corridor under Phase III-A. Officials confirmed that the decision was made following a recommendation from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), which conducted a review of the 37.8-kilometer project.
The Sarjapur–Hebbal Metro line, which has been awaiting central government approval for an extended period, has undergone several modifications. Previously, BMRCL revised the design of underground stations to reduce costs, and it has now opted to eliminate the proposed Veterinary College station from the project entirely.
A senior MoHUA official stated, “Officials had earlier inspected the alignment of the proposed Metro corridor and project area. They observed that the distance between Veterinary College and Ganganagar stations was less than one kilometer and that ridership at the station could be low. Based on this assessment, a recommendation was made to drop the station.”
As a result of these revisions, the project cost is expected to decrease to approximately ₹25,999 crore. The original Detailed Project Report (DPR) estimated that the 37.8-kilometer corridor, comprising 14.28 kilometers of underground and 23.524 kilometers of elevated sections, would cost ₹28,405 crore. The state cabinet approved the project on January 10, 2025, and correspondence with the Centre seeking approval began on January 15, 2025.
Meanwhile, BMRCL has engaged IIT Roorkee to study the feasibility of constructing a double-decker flyover along the elevated sections of the Sarjapur–Hebbal corridor. “They are expected to submit their report shortly,” an official said.
