Apple has officially announced the worldwide rollout of advanced age-verification tools across its platforms, designed to assist developers in adhering to an increasingly complex network of child safety regulations. This strategic update includes significant enhancements to the Declared Age Range API, which is now available in beta testing, enabling applications to accurately determine a user's age category and receive critical signals regarding age assurance methods.
Regional Compliance Requirements and Deadlines
In a move to align with regional legal frameworks, Apple has outlined specific compliance deadlines for various jurisdictions. Starting February 24, 2026, users in Australia, Brazil, and Singapore will be blocked from downloading apps rated 18+ unless they are confirmed to be adults through these new verification systems. For developers distributing apps in Brazil, if an app is identified as containing loot boxes via the age rating questionnaire, its age rating on the Brazil storefront will be automatically updated to 18+.
In the United States, similar regulations will take effect in Utah from May 6, 2026, and in Louisiana from July 1, 2026. These rules mandate that developers utilize Apple's APIs to verify age categories and, in certain instances, obtain parental consent for significant app updates, ensuring robust protection for younger users.
Enhanced Developer Toolkit for Age Assurance
The expanded toolkit provided by Apple includes several key components to streamline compliance efforts. The Declared Age Range API offers age signals and facilitates parental permissions, while the Significant Change API, part of the PermissionKit, allows developers to manage significant update notifications effectively. Additionally, a new age rating property type has been introduced in StoreKit, and App Store Server Notifications are now available for comprehensive compliance tracking.
Apple emphasized that developers can leverage the Declared Age Range API to present significant update notifications to adults in affected states through the Significant Update Action, currently in beta. When releasing such updates, developers must adhere to the Human Interface Guidelines and provide users with clear, meaningful descriptions of the changes, enhancing transparency and user trust.
