The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has announced that the prestigious FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 will be held at the luxurious Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort in Paphos, Cyprus. This marks a significant moment for the chess world as the most crucial qualifying event for the World Championship returns to European shores after its 2024 North American debut in Toronto.
Tournament Schedule and Format Details
The chess spectacle will commence with an opening ceremony on March 28, 2026 and conclude with the closing ceremony on April 16, 2026. Both the Open Candidates and Women's Candidates tournaments will run simultaneously, featuring eight elite players in each category competing in a rigorous double round-robin format comprising 14 rounds.

The announcement holds special significance for Indian chess fans, particularly following Gukesh's historic victory in the 2024 Candidates tournament. The young Indian prodigy went on to challenge and defeat reigning world champion Ding Liren later that year, establishing India as a rising superpower in global chess.
Qualification for the 2026 Candidates will be determined through multiple pathways including the FIDE World Cup 2025, the FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2025, and the FIDE Circuit. The Women's Candidates will additionally consider performances in the Women's Grand Prix competition.
FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich emphasized the tournament's importance, stating: "The Candidates Tournament is the final and hardest test for any chess player wishing to take on a world champion. Cyprus has hosted FIDE Women's Grand Prix twice, and the time has come for the most prestigious tournament in the chess calendar."
Record Prize Fund and Tiebreak Procedures
The 2026 edition features a record-breaking prize fund of one million euros, underscoring the event's growing prestige. Should players tie for first place after 14 rounds, a playoff will determine the winner who earns the right to challenge the World Champion in the November 2026 World Championship match.
FIDE CEO Emil Sutovsky expressed confidence in the Cyprus venue, noting: "The location and dates are carefully planned to provide players with ideal conditions. Cap St. George felt like the right place to host such an important event - a nearly ideal setting for players, fans, and media alike."
