Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has provided a significant update regarding the team's opening combination for the upcoming IPL 2026 season. During the captain's meet held on Wednesday in Mumbai, Gaikwad confirmed that he will return to the top of the order, partnering with the newly acquired Sanju Samson.
Addressing Last Season's Top-Order Struggles
The five-time champions endured a dismal campaign in the previous IPL season, with their top-order batting emerging as a major weakness. CSK experimented with multiple opening combinations throughout the tournament, but none yielded consistent success. Gaikwad himself batted at No. 3 for a significant portion of the competition, while the team rotated between Rachin Ravindra, Devon Conway, and Rahul Tripathi as openers.
Following Gaikwad's mid-tournament injury, the franchise turned to younger talents. Ayush Mhatre and Dewald Brevis stepped in as replacements and delivered impressive performances. Mhatre scored 240 runs in seven innings at an average of 34.28 and a striking rate of 188.97, including a memorable 94 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Meanwhile, Brevis contributed 225 runs in six innings with a strike rate of 180, providing CSK with powerful finishes during the death overs.

Despite the promising performances from the youngsters, CSK has opted for an experienced opening pair for IPL 2026. The franchise executed a significant trade ahead of the mini-auction, acquiring Sanju Samson from Rajasthan Royals. In exchange, CSK sent all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran to the Royals.
This strategic move indicates CSK's intention to stabilize their batting lineup from the very beginning of their innings. Samson brings considerable IPL experience and a proven track record as a top-order batsman, making him an ideal partner for Gaikwad.

IPL 2026 Schedule and Opening Fixtures
Chennai Super Kings will commence their IPL 2026 campaign against Rajasthan Royals on March 30 at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. Their first home game will take place in Chennai on April 3 against Punjab Kings, followed by another home fixture against Delhi Capitals on April 11 at the iconic M.A. Chidambaram Stadium.
