Madikeri: A wild elephant attempted to attack a forest department team during an elephant operation in a Kodagu village on Thursday. The operation was carried out after villagers demanded to chase the wild elephants that have been camping in coffee plantations in the areas of Byrambaad, Kannangala, Yadoor, Pallakere and Guhya villages under the Virajpet forest range for the past two days.
During an operation in Guhya village, a group of elephants chased the team into the coffee plantation and tried to attack the field staff, who ran to safety. More than 13 wild elephants, including calves, were found in the herd, which is believed to have angered the jumbos.
It was observed that some wild elephants got separated from the group and remained inside the coffee plantation during the operation.
The operation is being conducted by tracking the movement of wild elephants using drone cameras, foresters said.
