For Ishank Singh, a 7-year-old boy from Jharkhand, that meant swimming across a dangerous 29-kilometer stretch of ocean to set a new record. On April 30, Singh became the youngest swimmer to cross the Palk Strait, which lies between India and Sri Lanka, completing the feat in a record time of 9 hours and 50 minutes.
The Challenging Journey
The Palk Strait is known for its treacherous waterways, characterized by strong currents, high sea waves, and unpredictable weather. Undeterred, Singh overcame these obstacles as he swam between Talaimannar in Sri Lanka and Dhanushkodi in Tamil Nadu. He began his journey at 4 am and successfully completed it at 1:50 pm, marking a historic achievement.
Who is Ishank Singh?
Ishank Singh is a swimming prodigy from Dhurwa in Ranchi, Jharkhand. He studies in class three at DAV Jawahar Vidya Mandir, Shyamali. According to reports, Singh trained rigorously for four to five hours daily at the Dhurwa Dam in Ranchi under the guidance of coaches Aman Kumar Jaiswal and Bajrang Kumar. He followed a strict regimen to build stamina for the endurance swim.
His school celebrated his achievement, posting on social media: "Proud Moment for Jawahar Vidya Mandir, Shyamali, Ranchi. We are delighted to share a truly historic achievement by our Class III student, Master Ishank Singh, a moment of immense pride for our entire school family."
A Warm Welcome
Upon reaching Rameswaram, Singh received a warm welcome from officials and supporters who celebrated his victory. Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren praised the 7-year-old, describing him as a swimmer with "extraordinary talent." Soren wrote on X: "Ishank's success is a remarkable example of discipline and unwavering dedication to his goal. He has brought pride not only to Jharkhand but to the entire country."
Recognition and Records
The Universal Records Forum recognized Singh as the "youngest and fastest swimmer" to cross the Palk Strait. Previously, the record was held by Jay Jashwanth from Tamil Nadu, who completed the feat in 10 hours and 30 minutes at the age of 10 in 2019. Singh's achievement not only broke that record but also showcased his extraordinary talent and determination.
