Australia's temporary captain Steve Smith has pinpointed England skipper Ben Stokes as the pivotal figure his team must control when the legendary Ashes rivalry resumes at Perth Stadium this Friday. With regular captain Pat Cummins sidelined due to injury, Smith assumes leadership responsibilities for his 41st Test match and emphasized that Stokes continues to be England's most influential player across all cricket formats.
Speaking during the pre-match press conference, Smith elaborated on Stokes' significant impact on the game. "He has performed exceptionally well leading England over the past two years," Smith stated. The Australian captain cautioned that the dynamic all-rounder is not someone they should intentionally provoke, observing, "Potentially, he's the type of player you don't want to anger unnecessarily. He has delivered several remarkable performances against us where he's either snatched victory away from us or turned the game back in England's favor."
Stokes' All-Round Capabilities Highlighted
Smith characterized Stokes as an ever-present force in cricket contests: "He's an exceptional performer whether batting, bowling, or fielding. He remains completely involved in the game, consistently giving 110% effort. We're hopeful we can limit his impact."
